The Good Cinema
Documentary, 81’, 2021
A Catholic school, a turbulent political moment and a group of transgressive filmmakers. The feature film "The Good Cinema" combines these three elements to tell the story of the emergence of Cinema Marginal (“Marginal Cinema”), also known as Cinema Pós-Novo (“Post-New Cinema”), Cinema de Invenção (“Cinema of Invention”) or Brazilian Experimental Cinema. The film takes the viewer through the creation of the first higher education film school in São Paulo, through the eyes of one of its students, director Carlos Reichenbach. Through free connections that mix Reichenbach’s memories, his early career films, Rogério Sganzerla’s ideas and the production of Boca do Lixo in the late 1960s, "The Good Cinema" helps us understand the dimensions of very opposing views on the art of cinema, proposing the valorization of Brazilian cinema and the autonomy of artistic creation.
