Heco Productions acquired the patrimonial rights of films produced in Boca do Lixo during the 1960s and 1970s. This archive is composed of 56 films in total, made by directors like Carlos Reichenbach, José Mojica Marins, Jean Garrett, Ody Fraga, among others. The collection includes the Ozualdo Candeias Collection, which holds most of the director's filmography and his photography archives. For detailed information on screenings, please contact us.

Ozualdo Ribeiro Candeias was born in Cajubi, São Paulo, in 1922. He worked as a truck driver, among other jobs, until, in the early 1950s, he bought a 16 mm Keystone camera. He began to make home movies, learning all the technical details of the camera operation by himself.

He attended the MASP Film Seminar in 1955. He started to direct institutional documentaries and newsreel and to work as part of the technical team. In 1967, he made the low-budget feature A Margem, which changed the paradigms of brazilian cinema, being considered the landmark of the Cinema Marginal and the Boca do Lixo cinema. They were followed by the equally irreverent and experimental Meu Nome é Tonho and A Herança, starting a partnership with David Cardoso, producer and actor of Caçada Sangrenta and A Freira e a Tortura.

 

Candeias was director of photography and actor in several feature films, in addition to having worked on short and medium-length films. He also registered through photographs the daily life of Boca do Lixo, a place that he defended unrestrictedly. In 1981, he directed Aopção ou As Rosas da Estrada, which earned him the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Festival. He also made two films, this time with public support: Manelão, o Caçador de Orelhas and As Bellas da Billings, almost a farewell to Boca. He then returns with O Vigilante, and goes on to develop other projects, which he doesn't get financial support to. Ozualdo Cadeias dies in 2007.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION

The production of Ozualdo Candeias as a photographer was carried out parallel to his cinematographic activity and portrays the people and customs of the city of São Paulo between the years 1960-1990. The collection has a vast photographic record on architecture; the street of Triunfo and its surroundings; graffiti; portraits of personalities of the Brazilian cinema and backstage of several films produced in Boca do Lixo. There are also numerous travel records to Bolivia and Peru, Mato Grosso, Paraná, Brasilia and other regions of the country.
